Max announces first Italian scripted original

February 24, 2025

Max has announced its first Italian scripted original production, Portobello, from Marco Bellocchio, which will debut on the platform in 2026. Filming began in Rome in September 2024 and is currently ongoing, with additional locations in Sardinia, Campania and Lombardy.

The six-episode series tells the story of Enzo Tortora, the famous host of the real-life television show Portobello – which aired in 1977 for seven seasons – who was accused by justice collaborators of being part of a criminal organisation involved in drug trafficking. Tortora was imprisoned and tried for years before being definitively acquitted of all charges.

The cast features Fabrizio Gifuni as Tortora, joined by Lino Musella, Romana Maggiora Vergano, Barbora Bobulova, Alessandro Preziosi and Fausto Russo Alesi.

Portobello is written by Marco Bellocchio, Stefano Bises, Giordana Mari and Peppe Fiore; with cinematography by Francesco Di Giacomo; set design by Andrea Castorina; costume designs by Daria Calvelli; editing by Francesca Calvelli; and music by Teho Teardo.

The series is produced by Our Films, a company of the Mediawan group, and Kavac Film, in co-production with ARTE France and in collaboration with The Apartment Pictures, a company of the Fremantle group. The series is produced by Lorenzo Mieli and Mario Gianani for Our Films and by Simone Gattoni for Kavac Film.
