Spain tests 8K on DTT
October 22, 2020
From David Del Valle in Madrid
Spain has become the first country to broadcast 8K content under the DVB-T2 standard on DTT.
Public TV group RTVE has carried out the first transmissions, using DVB-T2 and Dolby AC-4 sound on the channel TVE 4K, operated by Cellnex Telecom, in several Spanish cities: Madrid, Seville, Valencia, Barcelona, Santiago de Compostela, Málaga and Ciudad Real.
The trial used Samsung QLED 8k TV sets. The signal was broadcast from the TV headend of the Higher Technical School of Telecommunications Engineers of the UPM, in Madrid, on channel 44 of the UHF, temporarily assigned to the RTVE Chair at the UPM by the State Secretary of Telecommunications.
RTVE has been recording on 8K since last year for the demonstration, including lockdown documentary Renaceres a 8K.
