South Africa: DStv price hikes applied

South African pay-TV giant DStv is implementing its price rises for subscribers.
September 1st will see viewers in some key markets facing price rises of an average 14 per cent “to cover rising operational costs” says the broadcaster.
Subscribers on the premium tiers will be spared the highest extra fees. For example, in Kenya subscribers on its Premium tier will pay (Kenya Shillings) 7,800 an uplift of 5.8 per cent on the old 7,370 fee per month (about €60).
Some markets have seen reduced rises. South African subscribers, for example, faced a maximum of 5.2 per cent rise for the DStv ‘Family’ bundle, but DStv Premium was raised by just 1.23 per cent.
Another market, Nigeria, ordered DStv/MultiChoice to hold off its price rises. Nigeria’s Minister of Information & Broadcasting, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, confirmed in July that the Nigerian government is looking to rule that DStv can no longer have exclusive rights to sports events, and in particular football.
