Spain: First live 5G TV
June 20, 2019
From David Del Valle in Madrid
Spain’s public broadcaster RTVE has made the first stand-alone TV live transmission using 5G in the country during the broadcasting of a news programme.
Within the framework of EuCNC 2019 and 7th Global 5G Event in Valencia, the broadcaster carried out the live transmission for the regional news programme of Castilla La Mancha and Valencia. For the connection, an HD camera was used with an access point connected to a 5G NR station near the event.
The transmission is additionally claimed to be the first stand-alone 5G in the world, as, according to the company, so far all previous tests have been based on NSA, non stand-alone 5G networks.
RTVE performed the transmission in cooperation with Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, Fenitel, WATCHITY, Cellnex, Orange and ZTE.
