Greece’s Digital Governance and Artificial Intelligence Ministry has unveiled the new national space programme Hellas-Space 2.0, with a total budget of €350 million, aimed at strengthening the country’s space capabilities and satellite ecosystem.

The new programme is being implemented through Greece’s General Secretariat of Telecommunications and Post, with funding from the Recovery and Resilience Fund Greece 2.0 and in cooperation with the European Space Agency.

According to the ministry, Hellas-Space 2.0 will serve as a key pillar of Greece’s national space strategy, covering the development of space infrastructure, the use of satellite applications and data, the strengthening of the domestic space industry, research and innovation, and the development of highly specialised human resources.

The programme includes the development of very high-resolution satellites to produce advanced geospatial data, as well as thermal imaging satellites for applications in civil protection, environmental monitoring and security.

Back in March 2016 Greece launch five mini-satellites into orbit on a SpaceX rocket. The experimental CubeSats will be used for research in new technologies developed in Greece on secure satellite communications, the Ministry for Digital Governance said at the time.

Two of the miniature satellites – ERMIS 1 and 2 -– were developed by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (UOA) and OQ Hellas to display technologies concerning secure satellite connectivity and Internet of Things from space.
