India’s state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL), which provides mobile voice and internet services throughout India, is looking to link with SpaceX’s Starlink broadband-by-satellite system.
BSNL was established in October 2000 having grown out of the early publicly-owned telegrapgh, telegram and telephone system. Its fibre system (Bharat Fiber) was launched in 2019. Its landline system had some 9.5 million clients as at 2021. SNL has already tested direct-to-device by satellite using a Viasat craft.
BSNL is reported to be in discussions with Starlink to explore collaboration opportunities in the areas of satellite backhaul and offering enterprise services.
“Starlink and BSNL executives recently discussed some of the potential partnership opportunities, such as wireless backhaul and strategies to offer services to large enterprise customers in India,” reported ETTelecom.
