India: Satellite broadband suppliers waiting for approvals

OneWeb and Starlink, both extremely keen to start beaming their broadband signals into India, say they are still awaiting regulatory approvals from assorted regulators.

A report on April 10th stated that both companies have already met stringent security requirements, including lawful interception and monitoring conditions. However, the final commercial go-ahead is still pending with the Indian Department of Telecommunications, which is expected to take a call after the Digital Communications Commission (DCC) reviews recommendations from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on satellite spectrum allocation and pricing. The DCC is likely to meet as early as this week.

“The security agencies have already given their clearance. However, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has not yet given any approval, having taken feedback from Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs). Ultimately, the final approval will come from DoT,” a source familiar with the matter told local journalists.
