Canal+ signs French cinema deal; H1 revenue up 40%
July 28, 2026
Canal+, the BLIC, the first signatories among BLOC members (the SRF, the SPI, the UPC, DIRE, the SDI and Animfrance) and the ARP have signed a new agreement, with a five-year term, aimed at sustainably preserving cinema’s place at the heart of the French cultural model. The agreement, which applies to Canal+ and CINÉ+ OCS, includes a global commitment from Canal+ of €980 million over five years in support of French and European cinema, starting in 2028.
This agreement places cinema at its core. Its artistic and economic specificities are taken into account while the status of its author is enhanced. Beyond the financial commitment, the parties wished to include in the agreement structural safeguards designed to ensure the balanced development of film production. Therefore, Canal+ is particularly strengthening its support for:
- new filmmakers and new styles of filmmaking;
- debut films and emerging talent;
- diversity films;
- animated films;
- so-called ‘films du milieu’ which are essential to the renewal of French cinema and its economic stability;
- as well as the most ambitious works aimed at a wide audience.
The agreement also includes several qualitative commitments aimed at improving the visibility of movies and supporting diversity in film productions.
Maxime Saada (pictured), CEO of Canal+, commented: “I am delighted with this new agreement, which highlights the longstanding ties between Canal+ and cinema. By investing a record amount of nearly 1 billion euros over an unprecedented five-year term, we are proud to reaffirm our support for cinema, its power, creativity, and diversity. The very best of cinema is on Canal+ just six months after its theatrical release and will remain so for many years to come.”
Meanwhile, Canal+ has reported that H1 2026 group revenue increased 40 per cent to €4.29 billion. On a like-for-like basis excluding MultiChoice, revenue increased 1.4 per cent. Compared with combined Canal+ and MultiChoice figures for H1 2025, revenue was largely flat.
Canal+ had 41.2 million subscribers as of June 30th 2026, up 8.4 per cent year-on-year on a combined Canal+ and MultiChoice basis. Europe increased 10 per cent to 18.6 million subscribers, while Africa and Asia rose 7.2 per cent to 22.6 million. Direct-to-consumer subscriptions increased 5.1 per cent, while wholesale was up 26.3 per cent.
Canal+ reported that subscriber acquisition in MultiChoice countries was 40 per cent higher than in H1 2025, with June delivering the best month for new subscribers in South Africa in a decade. MultiChoice adjusted EBIT rose 160 per cent to €143 million.
Saada added: “Following the acquisition of MultiChoice, our increased scale is starting to deliver the benefits we expected. We have achieved half of our €250 million synergies target and remain well on track for the year, and we confirm our full-year and medium-term guidance.”
