Germany planning Starlink rival

March 9, 2026

Airbus is working with German defence giant Rheinmetall and domestic satellite manufacturer OHB to build a Starlink-like internet service for Germany’s Bundeswehr armed forces, according to a Bloomberg report.

This is not the first time that the plan has emerged, although it confirms an apparent desire for Germany to want a fully independent source of satellite communications over and in addition to the Europe-wide IRIS2 satellite scheme being developed by the European Union.

Airbus has reportedly told the German Armed Forces Procurement Office it plans to form a consortium with two German companies to win the new SATCOM Bw Stage 4 space project, the Bloomberg report added. The project is worth several billion euros and is one of the largest procurement projects of Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s ruling coalition.
