The Motion Picture Association (MPA) has appointed Raúl Rolo as Vice President and Regional Legal Counsel, LatAm, reinforcing the MPA’s commitment to IP protection and government relations throughout Latin America. Rolo will report to Carla Sánchez-Armas, Managing Director of Latin America for the MPA, and Jesse Martin, Senior Vice President and Associate General Counsel (Global Litigation and Intermediaries) for the MPA.
Based in Mexico City, Rolo will help guide the MPA’s engagement with policymakers and authorities across Latin America.
Prior to joining the MPA, Rolo led Legal, IP, Compliance and Corporate Affairs for LatAm at HMD Global, Europe’s largest manufacturer of phones, tablets, and accessories. While there, he spearheaded anti-counterfeiting efforts and litigation across nine countries, significantly reducing counterfeit products and recovering tens of millions in lost revenue. He also held senior regional regulatory and legal roles at multinational companies such as Microsoft, Nokia and Asurion.
“Raúl’s career achievements in the public policy and legal arenas align with the MPA’s work in Latin America,” said Sánchez-Armas. “His experience in regulatory environments, combined with his leadership in co-drafting broadcasting and film industry laws will be invaluable in upholding IP rights throughout the region.”
Earlier in his career, Rolo co-founded and served as Lead Political Advisor for a group of more than 180 members, including elected officials and trade association leaders. He also served as General Counsel to a telecommunications regulator, where he co-drafted the first comprehensive telecommunications and broadcasting reform in LatAm. He later served as General Counsel to the Office of a Head of State, coordinating legal support to Presidential functions and participating in high-level legislative initiatives. Additionally, Rolo spent several years of his career as a partner and associate attorney at four leading law and public policy firms and served as law clerk at a Superior Trade Court.
“Raúl joins the MPA to further advance our regional strategies to protect creators and viewing audiences from the many harms of piracy,” said Martin.
“Film and storytelling have been a defining part of my life since childhood and I have always believed that protecting creative work is essential to sustaining culture and innovation,” added Rolo. “It is a privilege to join the MPA, which has advocated for more than 100 years for the industry and those whose content delights audiences around the world.”
Rolo earned a Juris Doctor from Universidad Católica Andrés Bello; a Master of Laws in Commercial Law from Universidad Central de Venezuela; a Telecommunications Regulation Diploma from the US Federal Communications Commission; a Business Law and Negotiation Diploma from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; and a Legal Translation Diploma from Universidad Metropolitana.
