BBC Studios announces that Ghosts is heading to Czechia

February 24, 2026

BBC Studios has announced that hit UK comedy format Ghosts is heading to Czechia, with commercial broadcaster TV Nova commissioning a brand-new local adaptation.

The Czech version will comprise of 12 x 35’ episodes and will be produced by TV Nova. The series follows a young couple whose dreams of renovating a dilapidated mansion and turning it into a hotel are upended by the restless spirits who refuse to leave.

This latest agreement marks the seventh territory, joining international format adaptions from the U.S., Australia, France, Germany, and Greece. The new license follows confirmation of a second‑season renewal for the German adaptation with broadcaster WDR and ARD Mediathek.

Ghosts continues to delight audiences internationally. In the U.S., series four ranked as the #1 returning comedy, with series five premiering to a combined 7-day audience in excess of 8 million viewers across CBS and Paramount+. Elsewhere Ghosts consistently outperformed the channel’s average audience for its premiere series in Australia, Greece, and Germany.

Rose Hughes, Senior Vice President for Format sales at BBC Studios said: “Ghosts is among the most consistently successful comedy properties on the global market. The magic of the format is that every territory gets to build its own afterlife, populated with ghosts who are deeply specific to its heritage; all set within the framework of a housemate comedy. This is a chance for world-building on a truly local level, where history can be celebrated and characters created that could only exist in each culture. We’re thrilled to welcome Czechia into the Ghosts family and excited to see the format generating even more success as new markets bring their own versions to life.”

Tomáš Baldýnský, creative producer from TV Nova added: “Ghosts is a sitcom about characters from all different walks of life existing together. Our history is very entertaining, and we can’t wait to see it represented through the humour of Ghosts.”

Ghosts was created by Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond. It was originally produced by Monumental Television in association with Them There for BBC One.

Ghosts forms part of BBC Studios’ unrivalled scripted formats slate presented today to buyers at BBC Studios Showcase in London. The lineup includes comedy crime drama Death Valley, which was introduced by creator and writer Paul Doolan, alongside Lynley, a new imagining of the hit crime novel written by Elizabeth George and ground-breaking, emotionally charged relationship thriller, Reunion.
