Starlink wins Emirates fleet-wide?

Elon Musk’s businesses may be melting down in value (Tesla stock fell 15 per cent on March 10th, and is down 41 per cent this year) but his SpaceX company is still winning contracts for its Starlink broadband system. But reports suggest Dubai-based Emirates airline has chosen to equip its complete fleet with Starlink direct-to-passenger equipment.

The news has not been confirmed by either Starlink or Emirates but sources say a formal announcement will be made at the Aircraft Interiors Expo 2025 to be held in Hamburg in April.

The Emirates fleet comprises around 250 aircraft, and flies more than 3,600 flights per week to more than 150 cities in 80 countries. The airline’s fleet is composed of three wide-bodied aircraft families, the very new Airbus A350, Airbus A380, and Boeing 777.

The Emirates story started in 1985 when it launched operations with just two aircraft. Today, it flies the world’s biggest fleets of Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s.

Starlink’s connectivity talks about download speeds of between 40-220 Mb/s (and upload speeds of 8-25 Mb/s) with latency of less than 99 milliseconds.

It is currently supplying or contracted for more than 30,000 flights weekly.
