September 27, 2012
The BBC iPlayer reached a new record high this summer, as viewers used the VoD service to catch up on action from the London 2012 Olympic Games. In August, iPlayer attracted 196 million programme requests across radio and television content.
The highest-ever requests in a single week on iPlayer came in the seven days commencing July 30th, when 51 million programmes were accessed on the platform by 11.5 million unique users in the UK as interest in the Olympics surged.
The iPlayer also hit its highest-ever requests on phones (22 million) and tablets (17 million) in August, representing almost a fifth (19 per cent) of total requests in the month.
August also saw the highest-ever proportion of live TV requests, at 32 per cent, largely driven by office workers keeping up to date with the games.
The London 2012 Opening Ceremony received 3.9 million requests on iPlayer, while the Closing Ceremony generated 2.1 million.
