Siemens: No more STBs
May 18, 2011
A second technology provider has proclaimed the end of the STB. Following Cisco’s prediction in April, Siemens today said a pay TV provider can now operate perfectly well from the Cloud, via Apps.
Speaking at the Connected TV Summit in London, Stefan Jenzowsky, VP and Head of Media of Siemens Media & Technology, said this new company within Siemens had challenged its 2,000 R&D engineers: Can an App replace the STB, can the Cloud handle multi-device delivery, can Apps achieve ‘loose coupling’ – seamless operation between devices, can a provider operate inside an App?
He said the answer was yes on all counts and claims Siemen’s TV App suite had already been tested across 20 devices including iPad and Android platforms and this would soon extend to 50 devices.
He demonstrated the company’s EPG and VoD search engine and how media choices can be ‘swiped’ from tablet to TV (all the rage at this year’s CES). He claimed content providers were confident in the CA/DRM provision (from Verimatrix) and that an STB free IPTV system had now arrived.
