India broadband subs touch 160m

India’s Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRAI) says the nation’s broadband subscribers now stand at 159.76 million homes (at the end of May) and grew 5.74 per cent in the month since the end of April 2016.
Five major cellular telcos dominate the business, with Bharti Airtel leading the charge with 40.8 million subscribers, Vodafone having 31,55 million, Idea Cellular 25.7 million, BSN, 20.76 and Reliance 15.91 million. Together these five have 84.32 per cent of the market.
Fixed line and other wired broadband subscribers are much more modest, with BSNL having 9.89 million, Bharti Airtel 1.79 million, MTNL 1.1 million, Atria 990,000, and YOU Broadband 550,000.
