Spotify is producing original video series, as the market leader in music streaming seeks to bolster the platform amid intensifying competition with rivals such as Apple Music and YouTube.
It is teaming up with actor Tim Robbins and Russell Simmons, co-founder of Def Jam Records, to make some of the films will focus on music culture and be available from the middle of this year to users in the US, UK, Germany and Sweden.
Spotify has expanded rapidly in recent years by offering listeners access to millions of tracks for a monthly subscription of about $10. It has more than 75 million active users, of which more than 30 million are paying subscribers. Last year the company announced a big push into video, striking deals to carry content from a range of media groups including the BBC, ESPN and Vice Media.
