World Rugby expands partnership with Ignite

August 28, 2024

Ignite, AE Live’s inhouse creative design agency, has expanded its longstanding relationship with World Rugby, by being appointed to deliver the motion graphics (gfx) and the title sequence for the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup 2024.

The competition is run by World Rugby, in partnership with the six unions (Canada, Fiji, Japan, Samoa, Tonga and USA) and is set to level up global rugby as a cornerstone of a new annual calendar, aimed at driving competitiveness ahead of an expanded Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027 in Australia.

Fans of storytelling and mythology, Ignite creates a title sequence that is a cinematic feast. The team researched the ocean dwelling deities from each competing Pacific nation’s culture, and reimagined these six deities in a story that sees them unleash the tournament ball upon the world from the depths of the Pacific.

The title sequence music features Pasifika instrumentation, including a conch shell and wooden percussion. The match graphics have innovative touches with the score ticker’s centralised tournament badge becoming a window for key messages regarding gameplay.

The match graphics tie into the title sequence, by having a motion principle, that connotes a sense of orange and blue energy transferral between team data presented to draw the eye, along with subtle textures and are fined finish that makes them stand apart from other match graphics systems.

Kaylene Hurley, AE Live GM, New Zealand, said: The Ignite design studio is always motivated to push the envelope and find new ways to make the tournaments appeal to a broad and diverse audience. The approach to the Pacific Nations Cup package was another great opportunity to collaborate with World Rugby and deliver something fresh and surprising.

AE Live Ignite has a longstanding relationship with World Rugby, and in recent years has delivered matchgraphics and titles for all of their top tier tournaments including the Men’s World Cup France 2023, the Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2021, SVNS, WXV and more.

Ignite was purchased by AE Live, a provider of data and broadcast solutions, in 2020. Along with the Rugby World Cup, AE Live’s portfolio also includes (amongst many others) Premier League Productions, BBC, ITV, Sky Sports, WTA Tennis and Fox Sports. In July 2023, AE Live announced the acquisition of Silver Spoon, the industry experts in real time virtual production content on Unreal Engine. They joined Ignite in the AE Live Group.
