Five months after launching, LaLigaSportsTV, la Liga’s OTT service, has reached 300,000 registered users, and has revealed plans to generate profit in two seasons, according to Javier Tebas in an interview with Expansion.
LaLigaSportsTV is currently offering 40 sports for free through mobile, tablet, PC and Smart TV (Samsung and shortly LG) with indoor football, basketball and hand ball as the most followed sports.
Tebas acknowledged that the cost of the OTT platform has amounted to €7.5 million – €3.5 million for the technology and €4 million for the acquisition of content. “We are the only sports OTT platform in Spain”, he underlined
“Real monetisation will come in two seasons, with subscriptions to products and sports in less than a year”, he said. Tebas explained that La Liga is not under pressure to make the OTT platform profitable in the short term, and was making experiments and learning from them about the user, data and data-driven marketing.
