Spain: TV advertisers lose DTT battle
January 25, 2018
From David Del Valle in Madrid
Spanish TV advertisers have lost their battle to have more space on DTT channels.
The Supreme Court has ruled that the awarding of 6 DTT channels in 2015 was legal and met all the requirements. The Association of TV Advertisers (AEA) had taken the case to court on the grounds that it was against pluralism and free competition.
In 2015, the Government awarded three HD channels to Mediaset, Atresmedia and Real Madrid TV and three SD channels to Secuoya, 13TV and Radio Blanca. The advertisers rallied against the licences of Mediaset and Atresmedia as the awarding intensified the duopoly in advertising with no advertising opportunities beyond those TV operators.
