NBC VR coverage for Kentucky Derby
May 9, 2016
NBC Sports made its first foray into virtual reality on May 7th by airing VR footage from the 142nd Kentucky Derby, in partnership with NextVR.
NBC and NextVR used seven virtual reality cameras – five placed trackside to capture the race, and two cameras in the paddock area to show the horses before parading to the starting gate. The footage was available for free through the NBC channel in the US on the NextVR portal, with Samsung Gear VR owners able to download the NextVR app on Gear VR headset-compatible phones.
The audio feed featured commentary from NBC announcers Tom Hammond, Jerry Bailey, and Randy Moss.
