Cloud-based DVR for Movistar
July 28, 2014
Alcatel-Lucent and Telefónica have enabled a new cloud-based TV feature for Telefónica’s pay-TV service, Movistar TV.
Using Alcatel-Lucent’s Cloud DVR solution, Movistar subscribers now have access to up to 350 hours of personal online recording through their set-top boxes with a service that allows simultaneous use of all channels. A ‘mosaic’ TV feature for major sporting events also allows customers to select between six different streams of the live action.
Alcatel-Lucent says its deployment with Telefónica and Movistar in Spain underlines its specialist focus on IP networking, cloud and ultra-broadband technologies. With video the predominant traffic in any IP-based network infrastructure, the company says its understanding and expertise is enabling customers such as Telefónica to unlock revenue potential from new services by adding intelligence to networks and moving to cloud-based infrastructures, such as the Cloud DVR platform.
Roque Lozano, President of Alcatel-Lucent Spain and Global Account Manager for Telefónica, said that as the operator expanded its fibre-to-the-home network, it was also expanding its Movistar TV customer base. “The success of the new features has been such that we are already exploring how we can increase the capacity and efficiency of the platform to handle the rapid growth in subscribers expected in the next year.”
