India’s Ministry of Broadcasting & Information, which licenses broadcast activity in the country, says they have licensed 786 satellite channels to be on air (as at January 31st). The ministry says 389 are news and current affairs services, while the remaining 397 are general entertainment, sports and other non-news services.
Of this total of 786, 664 are permitted for uplinking as well as DTH transmission from India, while 31 TV channels are permitted to uplink but not for local transmission, while 91 foreign channels can broadcast on downlink-only licences.
