Kabel Deutschland finally launches VOD
March 23, 2011
Kabel Deutschland, Germany’s largest cable operator has launched its VOD offering ‘Select Video’ in the cities of Berlin, Hamburg and Munich. With this initial launch, approximately 2.3 million households can receive the VOD offer which currently includes 2,500 hours of Hollywood movies, Pay TV and Free TV content. More than 60 per cent of the movie content is available in HD. 3D content is also available.
Access to Select Video requires KDG’s digital HD-DVR, launched in September 2010. The HD-DVR has to be connected to the household’s existing Internet access via W-LAN USB stick or Ethernet cable. The Internet connection is only necessary to order from the VOD library and to control such functions as forwarding or rewinding. The VOD content is streamed over DVB-C directly to the customers, without buffering or downloading.
Hollywood movies are selling for €5 to €6 per title. Over the next two years the VoD offering will become available in KDG’s entire upgraded footprint.
