TeliaSonera’s Chief Executive Lars Nyberg has handed in his resignation following criticism of the company’s investment in a telecom licence in Uzbekistan.

The move comes after TeliaSonera’s board agreed that criticism of the company’s activities in Uzbekistan is justified but noted that a company-inquiry had found no evidence of bribery or money laundering .

“Even if this transaction was legal, we should not have gone ahead without learning more about the identity of our counterparty. This is something I regret,” Nyberg said in a statement.

The Swedish telco has appointed Chief Financial Officer Per-Arne Blomquist as acting chief executive.
