BBC unveils fresh wave of children’s content

BBC Children’s and Education is delivering a new wave of storytelling, with returning hits and fresh family favourites across CBBC and CBeebies.

High Hoops
Following a successful first season, and with season two now airing on CBBC and BBC iPlayer, comedy High Hoops has been recommissioned for a third 10 x 30’ season. Produced by West Yorkshire based CanCan Productions, series three will again be shot across Yorkshire, demonstrating the BBC’s commitment to backing homegrown talent, creativity and storytelling.
Starring Peep Show alumni, Robert Webb and Isy Suttie, and Nigel Boyle (Line of Duty), the hit children’s show will continue to follow the tall, gaffe-prone but unstoppable Aoife O’Neill (Darci Hull) and her school basketball team. Season two features cameos from Johnny Vegas and Pauline McLynn (Father Ted). High Hoops was created by lead writer Sinead Fagan, the director is Ian Curtis and Rebecca Papworth is the Executive Producer for CanCan Productions.
The show was recommissioned by Director of BBC Children’s and Education Patricia Hidalgo and Senior Head of Commissioning 7+ Sarah Muller with Anita Burgess Commissioning Executive for the CBBC 7+ audience and their families. The show is distributed internationally by Madgic Distribution and has sold to ABC Australia, TVO Canada, ARD1 KIKA Germany, Canal+ France and EITB Spain.
Little Lunch: New Class
A decade after the mockumentary first captured the chaos and comedy of the Aussie playground for 15 minutes every day at recess, Little Lunch: New Class introduces six new students – Adelaide, Ivy, Mason, Steve, Bonnie and Arthur – as they navigate friendship, misunderstandings and the big emotions of small people. The new cohort will be taught by series stalwart Mrs Gonsha (Heidi Arena).
Little Lunch: New Class is a Gristmill Production for the ABC and the BBC. Major production investment from the ACTF and the ABC. Financed in association with VicScreen. CBeebies content
Yakka Do!
From King Banana TV, the producers of Yakka Dee! which teaches children early language skills, comes Yakka Do! (60 x 5’). Dee is joined by two new superhero friends Zee and Bea, and the animated trio lead real children through fun, educational activities that are directly devised to aid the development needed for school readiness.
Yakka Do! is based on the UK government’s Early Years Foundation Stage guidelines and gives parents and carers easy-to-emulate, accessible activity ideas that directly aid their child’s development. Joel Wilenius is the Commissioning Executive for the BBC.
Hey Duggee’s Squirrel Club
Spin off series Hey Duggee’s Squirrel Club (13 x 7′) returns to CBeebies and BBC iPlayer with new episodes. The series is created and produced by Studio AKA with BBC Studios Kids & Family and CBeebies. Nick Hall is the Commissioning Executive for the BBC. Hey Duggee airs exclusively on CBeebies in the UK and all episodes to date are available to stream on BBC iPlayer. Further afield Hey Duggee broadcasts in 75+ countries including the US and Australia.
Go Jetters Go!
Go Jetters Go! is a new series in the Go Jetters universe, set in Singapore and supported by the Infocomm Media Development Authority of Singapore (IMDA). The series (pictured) introduces Kym, a top Singaporean cadet, who is guided by original Go Jetters, Xuli, Kyan, Foz and Lars, on her global quest to locate the Go Jetters Cup and become a Go Jetter!
The series will be animated by UK-based Brighton Zoo Animation Studios, sister company of Blue Zoo, who previously worked on the original Go Jetters Seasons 2 and 3. Guy Phenix is the Commissioning Executive for the BBC. BBC Studios Kids & Family retains global distribution rights, with CBeebies as commissioning partner.
Waffle’s After School Club
Waffle the Wonder Dog is back for more adventures, with season 2 of Waffle’s After School Club arriving in the late summer. Waffle and his friends Daisy and Cole have plenty of fun ahead, with a mix of silliness and mayhem. Mr Brooklyn-Bell keeps everything running with his trademark guitar twangs, big stage performances and his usual joy and positivity. He’s joined, as ever, by Mrs Hobbs, who is still not the biggest Waffle fan, and her beloved cat (and the club receptionist) George.
Waffle the Wonder Dog is made by Darrall Macqueen, and Mark Barton is the Commissioning Executive for the BBC.
The Football Fantastics
The Football Fantastics are back for a third season, bringing even more Saturday morning energy as new members join the club to have fun, make friends and play football. Produced by Strike, series three films this summer in Yorkshire, with Mark Barton as the BBC Commissioning Executive.
Musical Storyland
Musical Storyland is back for a third season on CBeebies and BBC iPlayer, bringing famous stories from around the world to life using the power of music. Musical Storyland is a place where children’s favourite fairy-tales and traditional folktales are retold and re-imagined with the magical, musical touch of musicians from the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. Classroom resources to accompany each episode will be created for BBC Bitesize.
This 10 x10’ series is produced by BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in association with Sustain Video. It was commissioned by Kate Morton for BBC Children’s and Education. Lucy Pryke is the Commissioning Executive and Michael Gibson is the Assistant Commissioner.
I Can Taste It
Set in a vibrant West Midlands market, I Can Taste It invites children aged 3–5 to explore food through sight, smell, sound, touch and taste. Each episode begins at the colourful Taste Shack before Aaron and the kids head to a bustling local market to meet friendly stallholders and gather the day’s star ingredients. I Can Taste It is a 30 x 10-minute factual entertainment series for CBeebies, produced by Common Story TV and commissioned by Kate Morton for CBeebies. Lucy Pryke is the Commissioning Executive for the BBC.
Froglets
Froglets introduces preschoolers to three irresistibly cute wool frogs, Ziff, Pipp, and Button, who secretly live inside an ordinary family home with Mum, Dad, and their children. The moment the family leaves and the house is quiet, the Froglets pop out from their cosy hideouts and leap into a brand-new mini adventure exploring the home and discovering new things, guided by a playful narrator in Sue Perkins.
The 26 x 5’ series was commissioned by RAI Kids, Italy and is an international partnership between Eaglet Pictures and Pesci Combattenti (Italy). The creator and creative director is Massimo Fenati, with Tess Cuming as Executive Producer and the director and producer of the episodes is Riccardo Mastropietro. Beth Gardiner is the Commissioning Editor for the BBC.
Knee High Spies
Knee High Spies chronicles the secret lives of teddy bear Jeremy Buttons and his ragtag team of toy spies, Jeremy, Deena, Squash and Moss, as they embark on missions to protect their humans from the wicked schemes of the family’s pet guinea pig, Silver Paw.
Knee High Spies is a Werner Films production for the ABC. Production investment from the Australian Children’s Television Foundation (ACTF), ABC, Vicscreen and Screen Australia.
