Does the Netflix and TF1 deal signal a closer connection between streaming technology and classic media?

July 7, 2025

The recently announced deal between Netflix and French TV giant TF1 might have a deeper meaning than appears obvious at first sight.

Will it lead to a closer connection between streaming services and traditional media in the future? By looking at this deal and other examples, we can see that the switch towards new ways of getting classic thrills has already begun.

Details of the Deal

Netflix has announced that its members in France will get access to all the TF1 channels and on-demand content on its platform, starting in the summer of 2026. This means that Netflix subscribers can switch between the streamed content and TF1’s live or on-demand shows without leaving the platform.

The French media company has a series of hits, including the soap Demain Nous Appartient and the scripted drama Broceliande, as well as The Voice and live sporting action. This content will now sit alongside Netflix’s French content, such as Lupin and Ad Vitam, as well as its vast range of international shows.

The Move Towards Classic Entertainment and New Technology Merging

This isn’t the only sign that new technology is being used to make classic entertainment more accessible. Interactivity and virtual reality (VR) have already arrived to the world of sports broadcasting. Staying in France, the PSG football team revealed a deal with beIN Sports earlier this year to show its Ligue 1 matches live using VR, making it the first European club to show its games in this way. This combination can also be seen in other areas, like the live streaming of big chess tournaments and Tomorrow’s Golf League (TGL), where virtual holes take players to deserts and volcanoes in a format dreamed up by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.

Netflix’s recent move towards live streaming has incorporated live sports, award shows and even live stand-up comedy to their offerings. Netflix has also announced a partnership with NASA, meaning NASA broadcasts will now be live streamed via Netflix. The move signifies a trend across the entertainment industry, with other entertainment platforms also turning to live streaming. For example, many online bingo or casino sites offer live casino variants of their online casino games. In these variants, like Speed Baccarat and Mega Fire Blaze Roulette, a human presenter or dealer is beamed live onto players’ screens. Other features, such as live chat features, are also incorporated into these formats.

What Does the Future Hold?

If the link between Netflix and TF1 proves to be a success, we can look forward to more traditional channels being integrated into the top streaming platforms. It makes sense to use the latest technology to allow viewers to choose between all of the different ways of watching shows that they prefer. With the rapidly changing technology scene is one of the biggest challenges right now, we can certainly expect to see more exciting and creative entertainment partnerships like this one.
