Grey’s Anatomy celebrates 20th anniversary

Hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy celebrates its 20th anniversary this week. The show premiered on ABC on March 27th 2005 and has since aired for 21 seasons featuring 0ver 440 episodes – and has also seen two spin-off series in Private Practice (2007–2013) and Station 19 (2018–2024).

The cast has featured the likes of Ellen Pompeo, Sandra Oh, Katherine Heigl, Justin Chambers, Isaiah Washington, Kim Raver, Abigail Spencer and Patrick Dempsey in lead roles over the years, and has seen guest appearances from the likes of Millie Bobby Brown, Christina Ricci, Mandy Moore, Elisabeth Moss, Seth Green, Neve Campbell and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

The show is now available to stream on Disney+ and a recent report from Digital-i found that Grey’s Anatomy topped the list of ‘top ten shows on global streaming platforms’ in 2024 by hours viewed – with over 1 billion hours viewed in the UK alone, and the average viewer tuning in for more than 135 hours.

To mark the 20th anniversary, Disney+ shared a range of facts about the hit series:

  • Every episode is named after a song with one exception for the season-14 episode 1-800-799-7233. It was named for the domestic-violence hotline since the episode dealt with Jo Wilson’s abusive ex-husband

  • Jesse Williams was a teacher before he played Jackson Avery

  • Derek Shepherd was almost played by Rob Lowe

  • The show’s title comes from a real medical textbook

  • Grey’s Anatomy wasn’t the only title considered. – ‘Doctors’, ‘Surgeons’ and ‘Complications’ were other possible titles for the series

  • A real hospital is used for some scenes – The Veterans Administration Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center in California serves as the entrance for Grey Sloan Memorial
