Twitch blocked in China
September 21, 2018
Twitch, the popular video game-streaming service and a subsidiary of Amazon, has been blocked in China.
Twitch’s website has been unreachable from the country since September 20th and its app has also been removed from the local Apple App Store.
Twitch has confirmed that it is being blocked but it has not said why Chinese authorities have imposed the restriction. Similarly, no official statement has been released by authorities to explain why Twitch has been blocked.
The streaming service has been gaining a larger following in China over recent months. Many gamers flocked to it in August to watch eSports competitions at the Asian Games in Jakarta. The Games was not broadcast on state-run media in China, forcing many to use Twitch to watch the gaming tournaments.
