Job cuts at Movistar Plus+ to threaten service quality?

January 7, 2026

From David Del Valle in Madrid

Telefónica has opened a voluntary redundancy scheme for employees at Movistar Plus+, prompting concerns that the reduction in staff could affect the quality and reliability of the pay-TV platform’s service.

The process will involve up to 175 employees (out of the total workforce of 860) – fewer than the 279 initially proposed – and will remain open until February 6th. The cuts form part of a wider restructuring affecting seven Telefónica companies in Spain and a minimum of 4,525 workers across the group.

While the company says the plan is intended to improve efficiency and limit compulsory redundancies, workers have expressed fears that the downsizing may disrupt daily operations.

Telefónica has provisioned €2.5 billion to cover the restructuring and said it will prioritise investment in strategic areas, particularly digital and streaming services, as it adapts to changing consumption patterns in the TV market.
