Brazil’s TV Globo launches DTV+ pilot

May 1, 2025

Brazil’s largest broadcaster, TV Globo, has launched a pilot DTV+ broadcast in Rio de Janeiro, marking the beginning of Brazil’s TV 3.0 era.

This experimental broadcast, part of Globo’s 60th anniversary celebrations, allows for the testing of new content, architecture and technology in anticipation of DTV+’s commercial launch, targeted for the 2026 World Cup.

Initially covering roughly 30 per cent of Rio’s metropolitan area, the pilot broadcast utilises a 3-kilowatt transmitter and focuses on the South Zone and Barra da Tijuca. There will initially be six hours of daily DTV+ broadcasts.

The DTV+ app was demonstrated with live events such as concerts and football matches, showcasing features such as personalised audio feeds (e.g., isolating a specific team’s fan noise), real-time statistics, interactive polls, multi-view camera options and instant replays.

DTV+ offers personalised content and targeted advertising based on location and user profiles via Globo ID, which boasts 140 million registered users. Globo executives emphasised the business opportunities presented by this targeted advertising model, highlighting the potential for real-time product purchases directly through the TV.

Raymundo Barros, Globo’s Technology Director, highlighted the dominant position of broadcast TV in Brazil, which captures 60 per cent of the home audience across all devices.

The experimental project has been authorised by Brazil’s Ministry of Communications and the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel). While a presidential decree is still needed to fully regulate the technology, Globo anticipates its publication soon.

The broadcaster aims to expand DTV+ to São Paulo for the 2026 World Cup and eventually to the 15 largest Brazilian cities by 2030, with nationwide coverage within a decade of the official launch.
