Italian pay-TV operator Sky Italia is planning to expand its activities into the telecommunications sector.

Details of the transformation of the business – planned for spring 2019 – are contained in a confidential report, details of which have been leaked by local daily Il Fatto Quotidiano. The idea is to offer Sky-branded fixed and mobile telephony services in the country, as well as broadband, to pay-TV customers.

Sky Italia already has commercial agreements in place with the leading Italian telecom operators (Vodafone Italia, Fastweb and Telecom Italia), but customers end up paying two bills.

The Italian regulators are reportedly already acquainted with the plan that foresees the launch of a new company connected to Sky Italia that leases frequencies from Vodafone Italia and Telecom Italia. The telecom operators have invested €2.4 billion each in the purchase of 5G frequencies.

The news comes just days after the sale of parent company Sky Europe to US giant Comcast.  Sky Italia has 4.8 million customers and a turnover of €2.8billion.
