Yahoo axes Yahoo Screen
January 5, 2016
Yahoo has abandoned Yahoo Screen, its video platform and mobile app.
Launched as the home to both original programming and high-profile shows from established networks it has struggled to compete with Netflix and Amazon despite licensing deals with Viacom for Comedy Central shows and NBC for Saturday Night Live.
Yahoo says its remaining video efforts will redirect to its homepage, which still receives an enormous amount of web traffic, and to its existing online verticals like Yahoo Tech and Yahoo Sports.
“Video content from Yahoo as well as our partners has been transitioned from Yahoo Screen to our Digital Magazine properties so users can discover complementary content in one place,” a Yahoo spokesperson told Variety, confirming the shutdown.
