India’s current Digital Terrestrial TV signals are the closed domain of public broadcaster Doordarshan. That could change if India’s Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRAI) gets its way.

TRAI wants to open up spectrum to private broadcasters, and has issued a consultation paper. It wants responses from interested parties by July 22nd.

The consultation process is also looking at the future shape of broadcasting in India, and how the digital road map could evolve.

However, one of the key attractions would be the cash that could flow into the DTT system from private broadcasters, and the innovation that would accompany the changes.

The proposals are not exactly new. TRAI first suggested private participation in Indian DTT back in 2010.
