Bermuda-based satellite operator ABS will this week order another all-electric satellite, its third, from Boeing even though its first electric satellite has yet to reach its orbital slot.  ABS-3A was launched in March and will reach orbit this autumn.

All-electric satellites use ION thrusters to raise themselves into orbit, which takes many months. This disadvantage is countered by the significantly lower weight of the satellite which costs much less to launch.

ABS will order its ABS-8 craft, which will be located at 116.1 degrees East, from Boeing and is expected to confirm a launch contract with Elon Musk’s
