The UK’s film and television industries are to lobby against the European Union’s plans to equalise the prices and availability of digital entertainment across member countries, according to politico.eu.

Broadcasters, movie studios and independent TV producers are grouping together to present a united front against the proposal. They claim changing copyright laws, a key part of the European Commission’s digital single market strategy, will cripple their ability to finance productions.

“We are absolutely of one mind that this is probably the single biggest threat to our ability to make high-quality content in the UK,” commented John McVay, chief executive of Pact, the UK trade association representing and promoting the commercial interests of independent creative content producers. According to McVay, the digital single market “completely pulls the rug out” from under the sector’s financing.
