Ultra-HD: “The chicken & egg are leaving now”
January 13, 2014
While there was much debate at CES about new Ultra-HD display products being magnificent, and that prices were steadily falling, there was also debate as to the missing programming and content leaving consumers with a ‘what comes first question: The chicken or the eEgg’?
However, one continued strong supporter of Ultra-HD told delegates at a session organised by the International 3D and Advanced Imaging Society, that “The chicken and the egg have left the barn!” Stephan Heimbecher was the speaker (head of innovations and standards at Sky Deutschland).
Heimbecher added that Sky Deutschland was today testing 4K/U-HD transmission and capture, although admitted there was still work to be done. “We are back where HD was in its early days,” he said, but the Internet and news groups meant that there was high visibility and transparency as far as Sky’s work was considered.
Las Vegas delegates also heard that cable giant Comcast is working on several apps for the likes of Samsung and others that would bridge the 4K divide and stream Ultra-HD content to high-end displays.
