South Africa slashes DTT STB prices

The likely price of set-top converter boxes for South Africa’s upcoming digital terrestrial TV service has been dramatically cut back. Originally expected to cost around R700 ($83.60) they are now expected to cost nearer R400 ($48).
South Africa’s director-general of Communications, Themba Phiri says the government needs to stump up an extra R2.6 billion in subsidies to keep costs down for viewers, over and above the R940 million that has already been allocated to the project.
