Satellite operator SES, which now owns Intelsat, has said it will continue to supply lifesaving internet connectivity to Ukraine and other regions on a philanthropic basis.
SES CEO Adel Al-Saleh, talking to business journal Forbes, says the entire team at SES – in Luxembourg and Washington – is “very passionate” about connecting those who do not have access to conventional internet services and are stranded because of catastrophe.
SES, he said, aims to co-lead the crusade to help lower the borders around the Web to admit the one-third of the global populace, or about 2.6 billion people, who are now trapped on the other side of the digital divide. “We’re quite serious about supporting the world,” Al-Saleh stated, with ongoing activity to provide low-cost Web connections across parts of Central Asia, Latin America, Africa and “remote islands across the Pacific.”
HELP.NGO, the international emergency responder, is already active in Ukraine and 34 other countries with currently 78 active response teams working. The organisation says: “Help.NGO’s connectivity operations span three key areas: (1) enabling those affected by natural disasters to communicate with one another, (2) supporting first responders in reaching beneficiaries and facilitating communication in return, and (3) ensuring effective communication among humanitarian workers, including United Nations staff.”
