TNT Sports doc explores climate change impact on sport

March 28, 2025

TNT Sports has announced Playing for our Future – a new documentary that explores the pressing impact of climate change on the world of sport. A number of leading sporting figures and climate change experts come together to give insight into the challenges being faced and some of the steps being taken to integrate sustainable practices. The documentary airs on April 1st at 10.30pm on TNT Sports 1 and will be available to stream on discovery+.

Playing for our Future sees Reshmin Chowdhury start her journey at Villa Park to discover how climate change is impacting football through severe weather conditions, with one in four clubs at risk of being partially or totally flooded by 2050. The documentary also turns attention to summer sports such as cricket to explore the impact of global warming, where countries such as Australia are experiencing scheduling issues both at a community and elite level, when it is deemed too dangerous for players to compete in extreme temperatures.

The feature also explores some of the actions that are being taken to protect the future of popular sports. Tottenham Hotspur and Wales international player Ben Davies details the holistic approach his club have taken to sustainable practices, including running their Hotspur Way training ground solely on renewable energy. Australian cricket captain Pat Cummins discusses his non-profit organisation ‘Cricket for Climate’, which aims to spread awareness of the issues and encourage fans to contribute to sustainable practice. The documentary also explores the steps being taken in light of World Rugby’s commitment to halve CO2 emissions by 2030, including reducing unnecessary air travel for international competitions.

The documentary not only acknowledges the crucial role sporting bodies must play in developing sustainability at an elite level, but also addresses the impact of climate change on grassroots clubs and preserving the sport for future generations.

Scott Young, Group Senior Vice President of Production, Content and Business Operations, WBD Sports Europe, commented: “’Playing for Our Future is a powerful reminder that the climate emergency will affect us all, with a devastating impact on the sports that we love, both at a community and an elite level. We can all play our part by learning about climate change and sustainability.  TNT Sports has an opportunity and a responsibility to use its platform to create content that will raise awareness of the impact that climate change is having on sport today and in the future and highlight the ways in which both individuals and sporting organisations are trying to reduce their carbon footprint, to inspire us all to make a change.”

The documentary was produced by Zig Zag and was funded by energy brand Utilita in a deal created by Infinitum Entertainment and the AMS Media Group.
