Bariau returns for second season
March 13, 2025
S4C’s prison-based drama Bariau will return for a second series on April 13th. The long anticipated six-part drama series will be shown on Welsh language TV channel S4C and also available to watch on BBC iPlayer and S4C Clic as a boxset.
The first series of Bariau was broadcast on S4C in January 2024 and earned two BAFTA Cymru nominations—one for series producer Alaw Llewelyn Roberts and another for Annes Elwy, who won Best Actress.
The main character sees Barry (played by Gwion Tegid) trying to balance his responsibilities as the prison wing’s new ‘Top Dog’ and his personal relationships. The drama follows Barry as he confronts his childhood trauma in an attempt to move forward – but is he truly different from his violent father?
The series also stars returning characters such as prison warden Ned (Rolant Prys / Pobol y Cwm), fragile inmate Peter (Glyn Prichard / Ar y Ffin, Doctor Who, White House Farm), Barry’s wayward brother Dale (Iwan Garmon / 35 Awr, Hafiach, Rough Cut series 2) and also new characters Chloe (Alicia Forde / Waterloo Road, Time series 2) and Simon (Sion Alun Davies / Hidden, Steeltown Murders), Ian Puleston-Davies (Cleddau, D.I. Ray, The Responder) with Hijinx actor Wiliam Young taking on the role of a prison inmate called Jac.
The series is a Rondo Media production filmed at Llangefni’s Aria Film Studios on Anglesey.
Bariau is an original series written by Ciron Gruffydd who has a wealth of experience writing Welsh language dramas and directed by experienced director Griff Rowland (Holby City, EastEnders, Hollyoaks, Coronation Street).
