Big Brother, the show often credited with starting the reality TV boom, has been axed by Channel 5 some 18 years after the show first debuted. The final series will begin on September 14th.

“The forthcoming series of Big Brother will be the last, of either celebrity or civilian versions, on Channel 5,” said a spokesperson for the commercial broadcaster. “We’d like to thank Endemol and all of the production team who have worked tirelessly to make the show a success.”

Spin-off show Celebrity Big Brother has also beeen dropped.

There may be life left in the show yet, and there remains the possibility that the production company Endemol Shine could convince another British channel to buy the rights.

The show started on Cahnnel 4 in 2000, and shifted to Channel 5 in 2011.
