XGN launches 5G Broadcasting solution
October 13, 2023
XGen Network ( XGN), a network operator for US 5G Broadcasting TV stations, has announced the launch of the first solution for the general public to receive an over-the-air 5G Broadcast signal on an SDR with downloadable software.
The SDR software download enables SDR owners, most notably ham radio operators, the ability to receive WWOO’s Boston over-the-air 5G Broadcast signal, provided they have the minimum system requirements as outlined on the XGN website and live within the broadcast contour of WWOO.
XGN founder and CEO, Frank Copsidas, commented: “This is another exciting first for the US in the world of 5G Broadcasting. This is the first opportunity for the general public to receive an over-the-air 5G Broadcast signal on a Linux based SDR. While SDR’s are a specialty, every new platform must start somewhere and this is just the start! This deployment is the first opportunity in the world for the general public to receive an over-the-air 5G Broadcast signal to enjoy France 24 in English. This is the very same SDR set up used for the proof of concept exactly one month ago, September 13th, 2023.”
On September 13th, XGN teamed up with WWOO-LD and showed a proof of concept for over-the-air 5G broadcast with a 1080p programming stream of content from France 24 transmitted directly to developmental smartphones and an SDR plus a successful test of emergency alert services.
