Aircraft and shipping were hit by problems with Inmarsat’s I-4 F1 satellite on April 17th.
The satellite covers the Asia-Pacific region and is located at 143.5 degrees East and in particular covering the Australia and New Zealand regions. The problem is a “full […] extended outage” of services according to Inmarsat.
The satellite, built by EADS/Astrium, was launched in 2005 on an Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
Inmarsat said in an update: “Inmarsat is working with their engineers to have service restored as soon as possible,” but cautioned: “Due to the nature of the problem and the complexity of the recovery procedure, Inmarsat expects this to be an extended outage.”
Inmarsat said the recovery could take 10-12 hours.
