Limelight: “8K TVs pointless with no 8K services”
January 10, 2019
With all the 8K TV hype currently happening at CES 2019, Andrew Gray, Marketing Director EMEA at Limelight Networks, has addressed the fact that there are no services to accompany all the new hardware.
Gray commented: “At CES 2019, the elephant in the room is there to be seen by all in 8K definition. Announcements of jumbo sized new 8K TVs are pouring out of the event with Sony’s Master Series Z9G laying claim for the biggest 8K TV so far. But, the problems start where the glitzy launches and demonstrations end. That is to say, there’s nothing to take advantage of the 8K capability in the real world. Whilst such services might be on the horizon, they will require online streaming services to seriously reassess their content delivery needs and invest in a robust strategy capable of delivering against consumer expectations.”
Gray added: “In a world of 8K streaming, content delivery services cannot be awarded to the lowest bidder. Having a robust strategy that comprises operators with privately owned infrastructure will be critical to remaining competitive in this new high definition, high demand era. Consumers won’t expect anything less when they’re investing such significant amounts of money in their television set.”
