Game of Thrones finale sets piracy record
June 11, 2013
The Season 3 finale of Game Of Thrones has prompted an all time high for illegal downloads.
The episode set a new BitTorrent record with more than 170,000 people sharing an episode simultaneously, and over a million downloading the episode less than 24 hours after its premiere on HBO in the US.
The previous record was for the show’s season three opener, which was shared by 160,000 people at the same time.
Torrent Freak reports that the highest percentage of downloaders come from Australia, followed by the US, Canada, and the UK.
Despite the record-breaking numbers, HBO recently reported that Game Of Thrones is the network’s most-watched series on air, averaging 13.6 million per episode in the US.
In the UK, the finale aired on June 11th on Sky Atlantic and drew an estimated audience of 1.7 million.
