Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) last week destroyed more than 500 “illegal” DTH set-top boxes that were allegedly used to tune into Indian broadcasts. This batch of 500 boxes are the last in a total of 2500 units seized during October by PEMRA on a nationwide clamp-down against cable MSOs in Rawalpindi and other Pakistan cities.

PEMRA’s licensing director Wakeel Khan said the organisation would continue its work against smuggled decoder boxes coming into the country from India.

Local sources say that there are more than 2 million such boxes being used illegally, and depriving the local economy of some $200 million annually.
