Microsoft has partnered with Starlink to expand internet access in rural and remote regions around the world. The first rollout is already underway in Kenya, where 450 community hubs are being connected to Starlink.

“Through our collaboration with Starlink, Microsoft is combining low-Earth orbit satellite connectivity with community-based deployment models and local ecosystem partnerships,” commented Microsoft’s chief sustainability officer, Melanie Nakagawa, in a blog post.

After setting a goal in 2022 to bring the internet to over 250 million people before the end of 2025, it has extended coverage to more than 299 million people, Nakagawa noted.

“Kenya offers an early example. Working with Starlink and local internet service provider Mawingu Networks, Microsoft is supporting connectivity for 450 community hubs across rural and underserved regions, including farmer cooperatives, aggregation centres, and digital hubs. These deployments combine satellite connectivity with digital skills, tools, and ecosystem coordination to support agricultural productivity, access to markets, and adoption of digital and AI-enabled services,” added the blog.
