StarTimes Group, already with a significant presence in digital TV in Africa, says it is committed to expanding services including free access transmissions.
StarTimes Media Kenya’s Director of Brand Marketing & Public Relations Japheth Akhulia told Chinese newspaper Xinhua that the digital expansion project will connect 10,000 African villages with free digital television services.
He said that the broadcaster’s aim was to bridge the digital divide that has seen many Africa villages unable to access television services. Akhulia added that while many African countries have undertaken the digital migration process and started switching off analogue transmissions, many households in the rural areas simply had not been able to afford the expensive equipment to watch digital terrestrial television.
Akhulia said that StarTimes Media were in discussion with government officials across Africa to ensure the success of the expansion project.
