Canal+ French subs down, international subs up
November 11, 2015
Canal+’s performance in the first nine months of 2015 was boosted by strong performances in Africa and Vietnam and by the Canalplay SVoD service in France, but the French pay-TV provider saw a decline in its French subscribers.
Canal+ added 619,000 subscribers in the year to September 30th, taking its total to 15.4 million, while revenues increased 1.7 per cent to €4.034 billion. The company had 1.744 million subscribers in Africa, up 472,000, and 778,000 in Vietnam, up 100,000.
The group’s pay-TV subscriber numbers in France dropped significantly, and pay-TV revenues from across the country were down 1.9 per cent in what the company described as “a difficult economic and competitive environment”.
International pay-TV revenues, however, grew by 7.6 per cent over the period.
Operational income dropped sharply, from €633 million to €554 million, for the first nine months. EBITA dropped from €626 million to €550 million. Canal+ said the change was due to increased programming costs, including the French Rugby Top 14 championship, and transitional costs related to the company’s change in structure.
