T-Mobile cools on Starlink

T-Mobile, the US arm of Deutsche Telekom, has seemingly cooled its enthusiasm for using Starlink as its methodology for connecting its clients in remote areas. T-Mobile had a one-year exclusive agreement with Starlink which is now ending.

Jon Freier, T-Mobile’s CCO, told analysts that satellite-based direct-to-cellular is in a complementary category, noting: “[Satellite connectivity] is about 0.0002 percent of our network usage. In the busiest summer months that went up to 0.0003 percent. It is a very small percentage of the usage on our network.”

He added the next step is the joint-venture being established with Verizon and AT&T to better cover these remote areas. “Looking forward, the J-V does allow for individual operators to have conversations and agreement with other parties, but our expectation is that vast majority will be sourced through the J-V.”
